Clay Williams is a scientist, theologian, and spiritual practitioner who works at the intersection of science, technology, and contemplative practice. The field of complex adaptive systems unifies his scientific and spiritual interests, offering deep and often surprising connections between these seemingly unrelated fields.

Clay is the founder of two very different organizations, both built around the conviction that deep, rigorous inquiry creates robust communities. In the world of science and technology, he founded Medaptive Health in 2016, a software company that offered support to patients in clinical trials. In 2021, Medaptive was acquired by Greenphire (now Suvoda). In the world of spiritual practice, Clay founded Living Christ Sangha in 2012 at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church — a community committed to dialog and exploring contemplation across the Buddhist and Christian faiths.

Clay holds a PhD in computer science, where his research focused on the intersection of complex adaptive systems, biology, and artificial intelligence. He also holds a master's degree in systematic theology, writing a thesis exploring the implications of Paul Tillich's theology for gay Christians.

His spiritual practice spans two contemplative lineages. He practices Zen meditation in the Plum Village tradition; in 2007, he took refuge and received the Five Mindfulness Trainings from Thich Nhat Hanh and was given the dharma name Peaceful Action of the Heart. In 2010, he began to study and practice Grateful Living in the tradition of Brother David Steindl-Rast, attending five retreats with Brother David between 2010 and 2016. Clay is an aspirant to the Order of Interbeing.

Clay is married to poet and writer David Groff.
